Appreciate the good in life

At the risk of sounding all positive psychology, appreciating the good things in everyday life really helps my sense of wellbeing. When I was a bit younger, I lost a close friend to suicide.
In the earliest times after that, I remember being conscious of and appreciating the good things in everyday life (a good game of football with friends, a good packet of Tayto with an ice cold can of Coke).
I used to think of my friend and the fact that he wasn't around to enjoy the good things in life any more. In a strange way, it made me feel more appreciative when things were going well or when good things happened. It also makes me feel sad, I guess, to be reminded of loss but that mix of appreciation and sadness comes together to give me perspective, which I like.
