Bullying & Harassment
Anyone can be bullied – it isn’t restricted by age, race, gender, religion or sexuality. It can happen anywhere, from the classroom or sports field to the home or the workplace. Being a victim of bullying may cause you to feel:
- upset
- threatened
- humiliated, or
- vulnerable.
Bullying can cause physical, mental and emotional pain and can make you feel alone, scared, angry, confused or sad. All of these can affect your mental health.
Many people who experience bullying may fear reprisals if they tell someone. This can become harder as people grow older. They become more and more isolated, experience depression and, in extreme cases, can harm themselves or attempt suicide.
Talking to someone in confidence or who is completely separate from the situation should allay any fears of reprisals. What’s most important is that you do talk to someone, otherwise:
- the bullying could continue
- your emotions could remain unresolved, and
- your mental health could be damaged.
