About Mental Health

Look after your mental health

This website has been developed by the HSE National Office for Suicide Prevention (www.nosp.ie) as part of the ‘Your Mental Health’ awareness campaign, which aims to improve awareness and understanding of mental health and well-being in Ireland. This is particularly important in the present economic climate when we are under financial pressures, losing our job or facing relationship difficulties.

This is particularly important in these tough economic times when business difficulties and financial problems are impacting on everyone.  This can lead to pressures on individuals, relationships, families and friends.  This site will offer you some advice about how to look after your mental health and know how to help others.

The site looks at some of the things we can do to achieve and maintain good mental health; how to recognise when we need help or if someone we know needs help and what we can do to help them.

We will look at some of the most common mental health problems and when and where to seek help.

We work in partnership with many voluntary organisations – many of whom are funded by the National Office for Suicide Prevention (NOSP) – that provide information and support in times of emotional difficulty.  Links and contact information are provided on relevant pages of this site.

However, if you are feeling low for what seems like a prolonged period of time and you are having difficulty coping with everyday events, then we recommend that you contact your GP right away.  If someone asks for your help stay with them until they find help or accompany them to the GP.  If you or someone you know is in immediate crisis or risk, particularly of self-harm or suicide, you can also go to your local emergency department or dial 999 or mobile 112.
